Arlan G. Richardson, one of the most prolific researchers on the topic of oxidative stress and aging – has been awarded the Irving S. Wright Award of Distinction for 2008. The Wright Award is given by the American Federation for Aging Research.
The Methodist Hospital Foundation Chair in Aging Studies and Research at the University of Texas and the director of the Sam and Anne Barshop Institute for Longevity and Aging Studies, Richardson’s research with mice shows that oxidative stress is a key contributor to the aging process. The main focus of his research is whether or not reduced oxidative stress can slow the aging process.
Commenting on the presentation of the award, George M. Martin – scientific director of the American Federation for Aging Research – praises Richardson’s innovations: “He has developed at San Antonio what many now regard as the leading center for biogerontological research in the country.”
